Stretching Type
Here you are trying to force short lines of type to fit into a bigger space.
Compressing Type
Now you are squeezing a long piece of type to fit it into a smaller shape area.
So whether you stretch or compress type, you are changing the Text Ratio. And this is what makes it look distorted and unnatural.
Instead, use the Condensed or Extended version of that typeface. Doing so shows you’re a professional plus your type will look and feel natural.
Using too many different typefaces at one time, either in a heading, sub-heading or body copy, will look messy, unprofessional and confusing.
There is no hierarchy, so all the words will blend together, making it even harder to read.
Stick to one typeface at a time and instead of combining three different ones in a heading, choose a font family that has different weights, widths & slopes.
Drop shadow can give depth to a heading, but too much makes it look gimmicky and unreadable.
If you must add Drop Shadow, use a program that allows you to adjust the opacity, size and spread of the shadow, so the final result looks soft and subtle.
That’s a wrap on Type Crimes on your Website (are you committing any of these?). At some time in our careers, we’ve all been guilty of committing these crimes! But now you know the “Type Solutions” to say goodbye to a life of Type Crimes and give your Website the professional edge it deserves.
